Seeing the Beauty and Joy and Goodness of the World in Small Doses: Sagada Flowers in August

The beauty of the flowers peeked out from their shady corners. From a distance, they looked mundance. But the memory they provide is priceless. It is a constant reminder of the beauty of life and living.   Blessings we enjoy daily, and for most of them, because be so common, we forget to pay our praises. But let not us, because it is a sacrifice so pleasing to Him who still protects us, and gives us flowers and showers and contentment. Izaak Walton The simple things are the most consistent - they're the things that make us feel good over and over, that make us see the beauty and joy and goodness of the world in small  doses. ... Flower everyday is a constant reminder of the beauty of life and living. And if I feel an impluse in my heart to say "thank you" to the flower, it's all the better, for then my gratitude joins with the beauty and creates something even more.   livinglifefully.com/

Unfolding of Hopes and Dreams

By: Lepan The flowers of the Birds of Paradise threw crimson in the air like spiked rays of the sun. But they were no match with the spirited wind, swaying them like frozen birds in flight. Their leaves flapped in tatters, their stems bent like broken poles. Photo by Joel Aliping The other Birds of Paradise stood proud despite getting stripped, their colors ablaze under the sun. They knew for sure, the gardener would take care of what was left of them. Poking underneath the Birds of Paradise, I found flowers, so pale and fragile. They looked haggard, but unlike the Birds of Paradise who stood secure, they struggled to keep planted on the ground. They are the Ghost Flowers, thriving on decay, growing obscure on dense fungi, with no leaves and color; but they have their own story to tell. WATWAT

WATWAT is a Kankanaey term which either means the traditional partaking of food for certain occassions like kanyaw, or it refers to the meat cooked and shared in the traditional way. It is a community affair. Everyone is invited. I was in Mankayan the past two days and you just smell WATWAT in the air! There were wakes and funerals, barangay affairs, and community meetings - there you find WATWAT, practically everyday, every meal. Honestly, I love WATWAT. From time to time, I would miss this IGOROT CUISINE. Other people who are not used to eating this way may wonder... Usually, a black native pig (now hybrid kadi) is killed, the blood is drained , then the hair is singed and the skin burnt. The pig is butchered, the bile is read, then cooked.
